SGK has registered new climate projects in the housing and communal services sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Two more climate projects of the Siberian Generating Company in the housing and communal services sector have appeared in the national register of carbon units. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions reflected in them was achieved by replacing low-efficiency boiler houses with heat from thermal power plants in the cities of Kansk and Abakan.
In Kansk, the key event was the replacement of the boiler house in the off-rail part of the city. Now residents receive heat and hot water from the reliable heat source of the Kanskaya Thermal Power Plant. For this purpose, power engineers built a new pipeline with a length of 8.9 kilometers in single-pipe terms.

In Abakan, 7 old boiler houses located in the city of Chernogorsk and the village of Ust-Abakan were switched to the capacity of the Abakan CHPP, which increased the quality and reliability of heat supply to residents.
As a result of the implementation of these initiatives, the volume of greenhouse gas emissions reductions until 2032 will be 382,481 tons, which is equivalent to the number of carbon units issued. Thus, the SGK program to replace inefficient boiler houses prevents the emission of about 200 thousand tons of CO2 into the air in Kansk, and more than 180 thousand tons in Abakan.
Let us recall that Russia’s first climate change project in the housing and communal services sector was registered by the SGC in 2024. This was achieved through the implementation of a project to close inefficient boiler houses in the city of Krasnoyarsk. Since 2017, in the regional capital, energy workers have replaced 37 non-ecological heat sources. Consumers have been transferred to the power of thermal power plants, which are equipped with modern electrostatic precipitators with a cleaning efficiency of more than 99%.
“Every climate project is a real contribution to reducing the burden on the environment and improving the quality of life in cities. The company is systematically working in this direction, actively investing in the modernization of its production facilities and the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies. In addition to the climate effect, replacing boiler houses and switching consumers to heat supply from thermal power plants has a positive impact on the ecology of cities and makes the energy sector cleaner. Indeed, unlike boiler houses, our stations are equipped with modern gas cleaning equipment,” said Oleg Bubnovsky, General Director of Yenisei TGC (TGK-13) JSC (a division of SGC in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia).
In Russia, the issue of reducing carbon emissions is regulated by the federal law “On Limiting Greenhouse Gas Emissions”. As part of the law, a register of carbon units has been operating since 2022 – a unified information system where environmental projects are registered and their success is assessed. A carbon unit in this case represents the result of the implementation of a climate project – by the number of carbon units one can estimate how much carbon dioxide emissions are prevented due to its implementation.
