A jury found Routh guilty of all charges, including attempted murder, in September 2025. He himself acted as a defense attorney at the trial.
After the jury's verdict was announced, Routh tried to hit himself with a pen, but federal marshals (bailiffs) stopped him.
Raut, 59, has pleaded not guilty. He asked the court to sentence him to 27 years in prison.
During sentencing, Judge Eileen Cannon said it was clear to her that Routh was “participating in a premeditated conspiracy to take a person's life.”
Raut told reporters that he intends to appeal the court's decision.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi said Routh will never be released again.
Context
On September 15, 2024, the Trump campaign said that near his golf club in Florida there was a shooting. The politician himself was not injured. The US Secret Service noted that “the incident is related to the protection” of Trump. Rauta, from Hawaii, was later identified as a suspect.
On September 16, in an interview with Fox News, Trump said that the suspect in the attempt on his life, Routh, “believed the rhetoric” of then US President Joe Biden and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and “acted in accordance with it.”
