On this day Agathangel's name day is celebrated. This masculine name of Greek origin, meaning “Good News,” was worn mainly by monks in Rus'.
The day, called Agathia-half-bread, was considered a day of household chores. Those owners who did not have time to do this the day before, on Timofey the half-winter, checked the bins.
Exactly half of the supplies had to remain – otherwise both the owners and the cattle would have to starve. People used to say: “The agaphon plant doesn’t straighten its back in the bins, it keeps count of the healthy grain.” It was also necessary to check the sowing grain, put the barns in order – patch up the walls and doors.
No less than the peasants cared about how much snow there was in the fields—whether it was enough to water the land. “The snow is deep – the bread is good,” they said about this.
Also on this day the behavior of birds and animals was observed. If a tit screams in the morning, it means severe frost. But the squirrel, having left the nest and descended from the tree, promised a thaw. In addition, it was believed that the weather before noon corresponded to the first half of the next winter, and after noon – to the second half.
