How to celebrate farewell to winter in 2026: main rules and traditions

The arrival of spring traditionally awakens the desire for change. But true renewal begins not with cleaning the house, but with harmonizing the inner world. Therefore, preparation for this bright holiday should include not only external worries, but also concern for your mental state.

The deep meaning of seeing off winter lies in the most ancient layers of folk culture. This holiday was an important ritual milestone when, through festivities, food and rituals, the community performed a symbolic cleansing from the hardships of the past season. People didn’t just say goodbye to the cold and darkness, but actively “showed them out”, freeing up space for the arrival of spring light, warmth and new strength.

Putting things in order: creating cleanliness around and within ourselves

Big cleaning. Welcoming spring is a great occasion for a thorough cleaning. Wash the windows, clean all corners, get rid of old and unnecessary things, wash the floors with salt or herbal decoction. According to folk wisdom, the cleaner your home is on the eve of the new season, the brighter and luckier the entire coming year will be.

Liberation from excess. In winter we often gather a lot of things around us, and in spring it’s time for clarity and space. Go through your wardrobe, shoes and household items – everything you don't use can be given to those who will need it. Such a step will not only free up space in the house, but will also bring a feeling of lightness and spiritual freedom.

Renewing the atmosphere in the house. To fill the space with fresh and good energy, you can light candles, fumigate the rooms with aromatic herbs (for example, wormwood), read inspiring books or listen to calm, beautiful music. Anything that gives you a feeling of peace and harmony will help create the right mood.

Treats for the holiday table. The main dish for seeing off winter is, of course, pancakes. This season, experiment: prepare them not only with traditional fillings, but also with cottage cheese and herbs, vegetable caviar or berry jam. Also bake a “sun” – a round pie or cupcake to make the holiday even brighter.

Preservation and creativity of traditions

Creation of a ritual doll. The heart of the holiday is the making of a scarecrow symbolizing the passing winter. Invite family and friends to build it from straw and scrap fabric. During the creation process, mentally let go of everything you want to part with along with the cold season.

Noisy games and fun. To finally melt the ice of the winter blues, organize outdoor activities: ride down the slides, play snowballs, take part in fun competitions and dance in circles. This general joy helps to tune in to the bright, spring wave.

Farewell ritual. On the final day of the festivities (February 22 in 2026), spend the winter with the ceremonial burning of an effigy. Throw notes into the fire with your anxieties and sorrows that have accumulated over the season in order to free yourself from them and meet the new time with a pure heart.

Harmonization of the inner world. As you welcome spring, take care of order not only in your home, but also in your own heart. Clean it up: ask for forgiveness from those you may have offended, express your love and gratitude to your loved ones. Get your family together to look at old albums and have a frank conversation to break the ice of the unsaid. This will create a space for light and peace.

Planning a new cycle. This holiday is the perfect moment to look forward with hope. Write down your most secret dreams and specific goals, figure out how you will celebrate the arrival of warmth with your family, dream about those deeds and joys that will begin with the melting of the last snowdrifts.
