Secret data, Russia has not done this since the beginning of the war. “Panic of epic proportions”

In full swing of birth, Russia's official statistical agency, Rossat, has ceased to publish detailed demographic data. Contrary to the authorities' calls, the year 2025 marks an absolute new minimum in the modern demographic history of the country, writes the independent publication The Moscow Times.

In the monthly report on the “natural movement of the population”, published on Friday, Rossat eliminated the figures for the last month reported on the number of births and deaths, as well as the monthly data on marriages and divorces.

Moreover, the entire section with statistics in regions, which previously included data for each federal subject, disappeared completely, as the Russian demograph Aleksei Rakșa observed.

Of the five tables that were previously included in the report, there was only one left, offering only cumulative figures from the beginning of the year on births, deaths, marriages and divorces.

Censorship and in March 2022

“Basically, starting with March 2025, Russia has no public demographic statistics,” Rakșa drew attention. He recalls that Rossat closed access to data in March 2022, shortly after the beginning of the war, when he stopped publishing mortality by age groups and regions.

In 2024, all the information related to the causes of deaths, which allowed the estimation of military losses, was censored.

According to Rakșa, the reaction of the authorities is “inadequate” and denotes that “the level of demographic panic in the ministries has reached epic proportions”.

The reason for the agitation is clear: the birth is collapsed, despite the restrictions on the abortions, the promotion of the “traditional values” and the repeated calls of Vladimir Putin to the Russians to have 8 children.

The Rossat data show that during the period January-March were born with 11,500 fewer children compared to the previous year, totaling only 288,800 births.

Monthly, Russia beats new negative records, comparable to the levels of the 18th -19th centuries, Rakșa said. The total number of newborns in the first quarter was the smallest of the last two centuries.

Putin promised in 2018 that he would stop the decline of the population

In 2024, only 1.2 million children were born, the smallest issue since 1999. Compared to 2023, the birth rate decreased by 3.4%, and compared to 2014, by over one third.

The natural decrease of the population accelerated by 20%, reaching 596,200 people: almost 50,000 per month, or 1,600 per day.

In 2018, Putin launched the national program “Demography”, promising to stop the decline of the population over 6 years. In fact, the decline not only did not stop, but worsened: between 2018 and 2023, the number of deaths exceeded 3.4 million in births.

In 2024, Putin relaunched the promise, declaring that by 2030, the objective is to reduce the natural decrease of the population to zero. So far, however, everything indicates a flagrant failure.
