An 18-year-old Swiss man, who died on Saturday, is the 41st person who lost his life following the New Year's Eve fire in a bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, the local judicial authorities announced on Sunday, according to AFP.

“An 18-year-old Swiss citizen died in a hospital in Zurich on January 31,” the general prosecutor of the canton of Valais announced in a statement.

“The toll of the fire in the Le Constellation bar, which took place on January 1, 2026, has now risen to 41 dead,” added the mentioned source.

The previous balance indicated by the authorities was 40 dead and 116 injured. Several dozen of the wounded, many in serious condition, are still hospitalized in Switzerland, but also in France, Germany, Italy and Belgium.

The fire in the “Le Constellation” bar, whose victims were mostly teenagers, was caused, according to the investigation, by fireworks that ignited the sound insulation foam on the bar's ceiling.

The investigation should clarify the exact circumstances of the fire, compliance by the owners and the various responsibilities.

As the owners of the place, the French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti are the subject of a criminal investigation for “negligent murder, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson”.

As of Wednesday, the criminal investigation also targets two security officers of the town hall of Crans-Montana, who recently admitted that since 2019 no security and fire safety inspection had been carried out at the “Le Constellation” bar.
