Liverpool and Newcastle were involved in the final Champions League group stage, which took place on Wednesday 28 January.
The “Cormorants” beat Qarabag at home, 6-0, and finished the unique group in 3rd place, thus obtaining direct qualification for the round of 16.
On the other hand, Newcastle's 1-1 away draw with PSG was not enough for a place in the top 8, so the team coached by Eddie Howe will play Qarabag in the play-off.
Conversely, the situation is not as good for Liverpool in the championship. Last season's champions are only 6th, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal, and Arne Slot's side are currently fighting for a place in the top 4, which ensures their presence in next season's Champions League.
In the previous stage, the “cormorants” came back from 0-2 away with Bournemouth, but the “cherries” managed to win with a score of 3-2, thanks to the goal scored by Amine Adli in the 90th+5th minute.
On the other hand, Newcastle comes after two stages without a goal scored in the Premier League, 0-2 at home with Aston Villa and 0-0 away with Wolverhampton.
