The new documents declassified on Saturday by the US Department of Justice contain an exchange of emails between Jeffrey Epstein and Larry Summers, former secretary of the US Treasury and former president of Harvard University, in which they gossiped about Donald Trump, reports CNN.

The conversation took place in May 2017, when Donald Trump was in his first term as President of the United States.

“How guilty is Donald?” Summers asks Epstein in the email where they discussed allegations that Russia helped Trump win the 2016 election, which Summers says he found “plausible but not certain.” Trump has consistently denied any Russian involvement in that election.

Epstein replies that “your world doesn't understand how stupid he really is.”

In an earlier email from October 2016, Summers asks Epstein, “How plausible is the idea that Trump is a cocaine user?” Epstein replied, “zero.”

In July 2017, Summers wrote to Epstein: “I believe your friend is mentally ill.” Epstein replied that “he's not my friend, I've told you that before.” Neither mentioned Donald Trump by name, but the two discussed the president's foreign policy actions at length.

Epstein and Summers corresponded for years after Epstein's initial conviction, according to the so-far declassified documents.

CNN reached out to Summers for comment on the matter, but he did not respond. He previously told US television that he was “deeply ashamed” of his correspondence with Epstein. In November, he went on leave from Harvard University, while the institution announced it was investigating his and others' ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in prison in 2019 after being indicted for a series of sex crimes.
