President Nicușor Dan says that he had “a long list of names, a short list and some discussions” for both the leadership of SRI and SIE and that he hopes that “very soon these discussions will be completed”.

He made these statements on Thursday evening, at Digi24.

“There is a balance of power mechanism in any democratic system. The President proposes, the Parliament decides. For each of these services we had a long list, a short list and some discussions. I hope that very soon we will finish these discussions. I will propose, the Parliament will approve. We will have a discussion before,” said Nicușor Dan.

He said that many of those whose names have appeared in the public space as potential heads of the SRI or SIE “are not very happy that their names have appeared”: “It is friends of theirs in politics who have made their names appear and thus their theoretical chances decrease.”

When asked if the heads of the SRI and SIE will be appointed from among the parties, the president said that “the best” is for them to be from outside the parties – “balanced people, with human, professional maturity, who have related over time with many environments”.

“We will see what will come out of this discussion”, added Nicușor Dan.

The president needs the agreement of the governing parties, those that also have a majority in Parliament, so that the appointments for the heads of SRI and SIE are approved by the legislature.

The post of civilian director of the SRI has been vacant since July 2023, when Eduard Hellvig resigned. The service is now led by first deputy Răzvan Ionescu. At SIE, since 2018 Gabriel Vlase, former PSD deputy, has been director.
