The mayor of Câmpulung, Elena Lasconi, former president of USR and presidential candidate, resigned on Wednesday from the head of the local branch of the party. Lasconi told Cotidianul that there is no scandal in the middle, but that he made the decision due to lack of time. Contacted by HotNews, she also made a reference to PSD and PNL.

  • Elena Lasconi remains in charge of Câmpulung municipality, because today's resignation is from the head of the local organization, not from the party. If she were to resign from the party, that would automatically mean losing her mayoral mandate, according to the law.

“I don't have time to deal with this matter, I spend 12 hours at the town hall. I don't have a deputy mayor, I don't have a city manager. I haven't had any conflicts with anyone. It just seems to me that this is a very serious job. You have to deal with it, to expand. And I don't have time anymore, I mean it's too much. It's still 12 hours at the town hall”, said Elena Lasconi for Cotidianul.

Contacted by HotNews, Elena Lasconi spoke about a custom of PSD and PNL:

“I know that it is customary, especially in PSD and PNL, for the branch president to be the candidate for the position of mayor or the mayor, but I do not agree. If I spend 12-13 hours at the town hall and on the ground, when can I have more party meetings, make expansions, grow the team?”.

She explained that she did not resign because of any internal conflict. Previously, Ziarul din Muscel wrote that Elena Lasconi's resignation came after complaints related to snow removal in the municipality.

“The local press can invent anything, but no… What does the position of USR Câmpulung president have to do with the snow removal that belongs to the mayor?” she said.

On May 5, Elena Lasconi announced her resignation from the position of president of the Save Romania Union (USR), saying that she does it “with a reconciled heart” that in the last year she did everything she could “for Romania to be better”.

In the presidential election on May 5, Lasconi, in conflict with USR, which withdrew its support in the elections, obtained less than 3% of the votes. Lasconi was president of USR from June 2024.
