Although he was considered one of the most promising products of Canadian football a few years ago, Theodore Corbeanu he did not make Canada's squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old winger is recovering from an injury followed by surgery, ticking off the first minutes on May 24 after seven months of unavailability.
Five years ago, Corbeanu looked like one of the most promising products of Canadian soccer. Raised in Toronto FC's academy and transferred to Wolverhampton, the winger with Romanian origins was seen as one of Canada's future starters.
At 19, he made his debut in the Premier League and became, at that time, the youngest Canadian to play for Wolves in the English Championship.

Disappointing at the club, Theo Corbeanu lost the national train
Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Corbeanu failed to confirm in the Premier League, and his career turned into a carousel. The trajectory was oscillating: Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons, Blackpool, Arminia Bielefeld, Grasshoppers, Granada, then back home to Toronto FC. In six years, Corbeanu changed seven clubs and five championships.
The regression became even more visible in Granada. Transferred permanently from Wolves in 2024, the move was supposed to represent the relaunch of his career. He managed just one goal for the Spaniards, however, and did not become a regular either in La Liga or later in the Spanish second division.
Corbeanu returned to Toronto on loan last season, making 32 MLS appearances and scoring six goals.
Of course, the instability at the club caused him to lose contact with the Canadian national team.
Corbeanu collected only seven caps and two goals for the national team, and the last appearance came three and a half years before this year's World Cup. Meanwhile, Canada has found other solutions in lanes, and its name has almost completely disappeared from World Cup squad discussions.
Under the command of Jesse Marsch, from 2024 the Canadian coach, Corbeanu gradually came out of the foreground. In the last two years, Canada has promoted other wing and offensive players and the competition has become very strong: Tajon Buchanan, Ali Ahmed, Liam Millar, Marcelo Flores, Tani Oluwaseyi.
Theodor Corbeanu returned after a serious knee injury
On May 24, Corbeanu marked his return to action after a seven-month layoff in a match lost to Chicago Fire. Reason for absence? A knee injury.
“It's great to have Theo back,” Toronto coach Robin Fraser said, according to mlssoccer.com. “He is a very dangerous player, good in one-on-one duels, and I think he came into the game quite well,” added the technician.
“In the beginning he played simple, protected the ball and did a lot of things that an attacking player needs to do, even if he didn't get to do the things that he likes to do the most,” commented Fraser, according to the quoted source.
Corbeanu underwent surgery in February of this year.

Not all Canadians were aware of Corbeanu's problems: “I really thought we would see him on the list”
On Reddit, in a debate about the team called by Jesse Marsch, Canadian fans asked themselves the other day what is the current situation of Theo Corbeanu: “I really thought we would see Corbeanu on this list. He had so much potential…”, wrote a supporter who was not aware of the medical report of the attacker who can also perform in the band.
Theo dreamed of catching the World Cup in 2026, especially since the final tournament is also organized by Canada, along with the USA and Mexico.
Born in Canada, from Romanian parents, who emigrated to the Land of the Maple Leaf in 1999Corbeanu played two years for Romania's juniors, between 2017 and 2019. Finally, he chose the national team of his native country, for which he made 7 appearances and scored two goals.
Theodor Corbeanu had refused Romania: “I always wanted to play for Canada”
Theodor Corbeanu's decision to represent Canada was made in 2019, also tempted by the possibility of representing the “maple leaf” national team at the 2026 World Cup.
“I represented Romania at the junior level. I didn't do it for Canada, because I wasn't selected for the U15. I wanted experience in international football, I wanted to test my qualities against the most talented players,” Corbeanu testified in an interview for the 101greatgoals.com website, recalling that “I contacted the Romanian Federation, they told me that they know me and follow me, I sent them some clips of me made by my brother and so I arrived in Romania”.
In the end, however, he preferred Canada “because I felt it was the most appropriate at this moment, when my country has a very promising generation, and the World Cup, which will also be hosted by Canada, is approaching. I think I am part of the 2026 adventure, a challenge that inspires and motivates me. I always wanted to play for Canada”
For two years, 2017-2019, Corbeanu played for Romania U16 and U17. The first time, in September 2017, with two goals in a 3-1 win against Ireland, in Mogoșoaia.
