Folk calendar

Nina – rituals of cattle.

The day received its original name in honor of St. Nina. This was the name of the Georgian queen, who introduced Christianity to her country in the 4th century. According to legend, the Lord himself blessed Nina for her apostolic feat, and the Virgin Mary handed her a cross made of grapevines.

The second part of the name comes from the Russian custom of caring for livestock on this day. The animals were cleaned, manure was taken out of the barn, and straw was spread on the floor. The cattle were treated with kind words and treated to fresh bread and vegetables. People used to say: “Give joy to the cattle on St. Nina.”

Going out into the street, we noticed signs. If the trees were covered with frost, this foreshadowed warmth, but white clouds promised cold. If it snowed on a frosty day, they waited for warming, and if a pillar of sunlight appeared at sunset, on the contrary, they prepared for frost. It was believed that the early crowing of roosters promised warmth, and the croaking of a crow in the morning meant a blizzard.
