Public approval of President Donald Trump's immigration policy has fallen to its lowest level since he returned to the White House, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows, with a majority of Americans saying his crackdown on immigrants has gone too far.
The survey, conducted nationwide between Friday and Sunday last week, collected responses before and after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers killed a second American citizen in Minneapolis on Saturday, paramedic Alex Pretti, amid clashes with protesters against Trump's deployment of ICE agents to US cities.
Just 39 percent of Americans approve of Trump's immigration handling, down from 41 percent earlier this month, while 53 percent disapprove, according to the Reuters poll.
Immigration has been a strong point for Trump's popularity in the weeks since his second term was inaugurated in January. In February, 50% approved of the policy and 41% disapproved.
Trump's overall approval rating fell to 38 percent, matching the lowest level of his current term, down from 41 percent in the previous Jan. 12-13 Reuters/Ipsos poll.
About 58 percent of respondents said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents went “too far” in their enforcement actions, while 12 percent felt they did not go far enough and 26 percent said the agents' efforts were “about right.” About nine in ten Democratic voters said the agencies had gone too far, compared with two in ten Republicans and six in ten independents.
The survey, conducted online nationwide, gathered responses from 1,139 US adults and had a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.
Alex Pretti's killing came after an ICE agent fatally shot another American citizen, Renee Nicole Good, also in Minneapolis, on Jan. 7 after he approached her stopped car.
Alex Pretti and Renee Good were 37 years old.
