US President Donald Trump said the Greenland deal would include installing “part” of the Golden Dome system on the island. Golden Dome – a project for a new anti-missile shield, which assumes, among others, placing interceptor missiles in space.

Trump has previously argued in media interviews that thanks to Greenland, the Golden Dome would be more effective. On Thursday, he told Fox News that an element of the system was to be installed on this island. – And this is a very important part, because everything flies over Greenland, if the bad guys start shooting, it will fly over Greenland. (…) So we shoot it down. It's quite reliable, he explained.
Also on Wednesday, Axios reported that the framework for the Greenland agreement announced by Trump includes language on locating part of the US defense project in Greenland.
Golden Dome – this is the project of a new anti-missile shield announced by Trump in May last year. Trump announced that his administration has “officially selected the architecture of a state-of-the-art system that will deploy next-generation technologies on land, at sea and in space, including space-based sensors and missile interceptors.” The president then announced that the system would be completed by the end of his term and would be almost 100% effective.
As announced by Trump The Golden Dome would be capable of shooting down enemy missiles from space and would protect against all types of missiles, including hypersonic missiles. It was announced that the shield would be multi-layered, based on open architecture, integrated with existing systems and built by many companies, which, however, have not been selected yet. The system, covering many different programs, is to be built, among others: in Florida, Georgia, Indiana and Alaska.
According to estimates by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the cost of the elements to be placed in space alone is estimated at $542 billion. The concept of the Golden Dome was partly inspired by Israel's Iron Dome defense system.
The Golden Dome is to be an extension of the project initiated by Ronald Reagan and called by journalists the “Star Wars” program, which failed due to the lack of appropriate technologies.
CBS News wrote on Thursday that plans to build the shield are far from fruition, and their implementation will cost dearly. “The costs are certainly a deterrent,” retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, former commander of U.S. Central Command, told CBS.
– But on the other hand, the ability to defend the United States against a nuclear attack, not necessarily a massive attack from Russia, but an attack from North Korea, Iran, a potential attack from a country like Pakistan that is working on developing an intercontinental ballistic missile. I believe all of this is doable and certainly worth the cost that would be necessary to make the system work, he added.
China criticized the project, assessing that its implementation may increase the risk of militarization of space and fuel an arms race.
