The refrigerator does not smell “rotten”: I use a systematic approach and “kick out” the smell even after a week’s vacation

It happens that you open the refrigerator, and it smells musty, although everything inside seems fresh. It's not just one spoiled yogurt. The smell eats into the rubber bands, hides under drawers and remains even after regular cleaning. But you can drive him out if you act not locally, but throughout the house.

Here are five simple steps that work even in an old refrigerator after a long vacation.

1. Complete unloading and shutdown

Remove all contents and throw away any expired or questionable contents. Unplug the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes. This way you can reach all corners without condensation.

2. Deep cleaning of all surfaces

Disassemble shelves and drawers. Rinse them with warm water and baking soda. Wipe the inner walls with a solution of vinegar and water. Pay special attention to the rubber door seal: mold often accumulates there. Brush it with an old toothbrush.

3. Treatment of hard-to-reach areas

Wipe down the back wall, ventilation holes, and the niche under the vegetable drawers. If there is a removable panel at the bottom, remove it and clean underneath. This is where crumbs and drops often remain and begin to ferment.

4. Natural absorbent inside

Once dry, place an open jar of baking soda or activated carbon inside. Change every 2-3 weeks. This will prevent the odors from returning.

5. Storage rules for the future

Store fish, cheese, onions and other “flavorful” foods in airtight containers. Do not leave food on open plates. Once a month, do a “mini-audit”: throw out everything that causes doubt.

A combination of these steps will make your refrigerator feel clean and fresh again without expensive sprays and fresheners.
