Folk calendar
Yermilov day
Among the people, this day was named in honor of the church date established in memory of the martyrs Ermilus and Stratonik of Sinigidon (Belgrade), who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries.
Due to the cold weather, this day was supposed to be spent at home. People said: “If you have a problem on the stove, overcome the disease and never have pain again.” Another similar saying sounded like this: “Erema is on the stove, and the cat is in the stove.”
Yeremu (Ermila) was advised to especially carefully monitor the cat living in the house. It is no secret that the weather can be predicted by the behavior of this animal. We still know that if a cat curls up and hides its face, it means we need to wait for frost. However, earlier popular forecasts were more varied. For example, they said: “If a cat rolls on the floorboards, the heat is knocking on the house; if it tears at the wall, bad weather is at the gate.”
One could also ask the cat for a cure for illnesses. The old people advised, in case of an incomprehensible illness, to observe where the little animal most often lies down, “to stand in this place and not leave it for a longer time.” Cats were generally revered. It was believed that if someone kills this animal, he will not be happy for seven years.
However, there were also more prosaic signs. So, a foggy circle for about a month on Ermilin day foreshadowed a blizzard.
