I plant in the spring – I eat all winter: three varieties of carrots for a lazy garden – sweet, juicy, coreless, grow even in partial shade

Not every carrot pleases with its sweetness and dense pulp. One variety produces small roots already in July, another produces a hard core, and the third cracks after the first rain. But there are proven options: productive, sweet and unpretentious, which will grow even in a garden bed next to a fence and will not require daily care.

1. Nantes 4

A classic for the home garden. The roots are cylindrical, 15–18 cm long, bright orange, with thin skin and almost no core. The pulp is juicy, sweet, with a delicate aroma. Ideal for salads, juices and baby food. Grows well even on light soils and in partial shade.

2. Vitamin 6

Late-ripening variety with high carotene content. The roots are blunt-ended, dense, up to 20 cm, with smooth skin. The taste is richly sweet, even in the middle of winter. Does not crack during storage, resistant to rot. Great for freezing and long-term storage.

3. Samson

A Dutch hybrid bred specifically for yield and storage. The root crops are smooth, up to 25 cm, heavy and almost without a core. The pulp is crispy and does not lose its juiciness even after four months in the cellar. It does not darken or taste bitter when cut. Ideal for large families and workpieces.

These three varieties do not require deep digging or frequent weeding. It is enough to make a furrow, spread the seeds, sprinkle with earth and regularly loosen the top layer. In just two months you can begin selective harvesting, and the main harvest will be in boxes until spring.

Question and answer:

Why do carrots crack?
Due to uneven watering. These varieties are resistant to cracking even in rain.

How to store carrots until March?
In a cool cellar in boxes with sand or parchment bags. It is important not to wash before storing.

Do carrots need to be watered often?
Moderate watering 1-2 times a week is sufficient. Avoid drying out in the first weeks.
