Intensified cooperation between the president and the parliament
Szynkowski vel Sęk, in an interview with the Polish Press Agency, emphasized that the meeting was of a working nature and was used to discuss plans for the coming weeks and months. Two topics were at the center of the talks: cooperation in the legislative field and coordination of international activities.
The MP emphasized that the Council of Parliamentarians is to be a platform enabling more effective cooperation between the president and the parliament. As he explained, President Karol Nawrocki is submitting a number of bills that require further consultations. “We would like the president's legislative activity to naturally find space for additional consultation, which is also missing with parliamentarians,” said Szynkowski vel Sęk.
According to the MP, the current political system does not give the president full control over draft laws after their initiation. Parliamentarians can introduce amendments that the head of state has no influence on. “The president faces a choice: sign the bill or veto it in its entirety, without the possibility of accepting it with selected amendments,” he noted. Therefore, as he emphasized, space for dialogue is needed already at the stage of processing draft bills.
Parliamentary diplomacy and international priorities
The second key point of discussion was the coordination of the president's and parliament's international activities. Szynkowski vel Sęk drew attention to the extensive international activity of the Sejm, including the activities of bilateral parliamentary groups. “It is worth making this group aware of the goals and priorities of the president's and his associates' activity,” the MP noted.
The Council of Parliamentarians, established at the beginning of January by President Nawrocki, consists of seven MPs representing various groups, including PiS, PSL, Konfederacja and unaffiliated. As the Chancellery of the President emphasized, the aim of the Council is to support the head of state through the knowledge and experience of parliamentarians, which is intended to improve the legislative process and ensure the creation of citizen-friendly law.
In the act of establishing the Council, the President emphasized that its task is not to build a community of views, but to conduct a dialogue based on mutual respect. “I want to take into account the opinions of representatives of the widest possible group of voters,” emphasized Karol Nawrocki.
