British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday that US President Donald Trump's threats to implement additional tariffs on some European countries, including the United Kingdom, “is not a way to treat your allies,” reports CNN.
The head of British diplomacy stated in the House of Commons that “this is a serious time for our transatlantic partnerships and discussions”.
“Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Its future belongs to the Greenlanders and the Danes, and them alone,” added Yvette Cooper.
Trump on Saturday threatened several European countries – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland – to impose additional tariffs on them until “an agreement for the full and complete sale of Greenland” is reached. The new tax, of 10%, will enter into force on February 1 and could reach 25% on June 1, the American president said.
Cooper believes that the threat and use of tariffs in this way “is completely wrong. It is unjustified and counterproductive.”
“The US already has a 1951 treaty with Denmark in place, which already provides for an extended US security presence in Greenland. Alliances endure because they are built on respect and partnership, not pressure,” the British foreign secretary stressed.
She said the UK plans to “contribute” to a series of exercises throughout 2026 to “strengthen our Arctic security”.
“This is how we believe we can best strengthen our Arctic security, for the good of Western Europe and North America, together, through alliances and partnerships, not through threats of tariffs or sovereignty, which simply undermine our collective security.”
