Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski asked on Tuesday a “equitable” conclusion of the war with Russia, without “rewards” for Vladimir Putin, rejecting requests for Kiev to make territorial concessions. The statement of the Ukrainian leader comes against the background of information according to which the US would have suggested the freezing of the fronts and accepting Russia's control over the Crimea Peninsula, occupied in 2014, proposals rejected by Zelenski. The Moscow army continued the attacks on Ukraine, launching a new wave of drones on civil targets.
Wednesday's evolutions, day 1162 of the Ukraine War:
Russian drone swarms attacked the Ukrainian cities of Kharkov and Dnipro on Tuesday evening, killing at least one person and hurting at least 46, Ukrainian officials said, according to Reuters.
Kharkov, located in the northeast of the country, near the border with Russia, and the second largest city in Ukraine, has been the target of regular attacks with Russian drones and missiles since Moscow began the large-scale invasion, more than three years ago.
The attack on the city, which took place on Tuesday night, hurt at least 45 people, including two children and a pregnant woman, said the regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.
The attacks took place in the context in which the United States, who tried to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, said they will withdraw from the role of mediator, unless Moscow and Kiev will present concrete proposals.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday a three-day armistice, between 8 and 10 May, to mark 80 years since the victory of the Soviet Union and his allies in World War II, while Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski requested an immediate armistice for at least 30 days.
The mayor of Kharkov, Ihor Terekhov, said several areas of the city, devastated by successive attacks, were the target of Tuesday attacks. About 1.2 million people live in Kharkov, compared to almost 2 million before Moscow's invasion of February 2022.
“There were 16 attacks on Kharkov,” Terekhov wrote on the Telegram Messaging application. “An apartment block has been hit, like private houses, a medical unit and civil infrastructure.”
The public television station Sighne published photos with firefighters who were fighting the flames.
Suspilne reported that a drone hit the eight floor of a block. He also said that two medical units were hit.
In Dnipro, in Southeast Ukraine, the drones caused fires and killed a 53-year-old man and hurt another person, said Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region on Telegram.
“A difficult night for Dnipro,” Lysak wrote. “Private houses were damaged.”
He said nine Russian drones were destroyed over the region during the night.
The total extent of the night attack on Ukraine was not clear. Both sides deny that they would have targeted civilians.
A massive attack with Russian drones in Dnipro last month killed four people and caused a proportional fire in a hotel and restaurant complex and other buildings.
About 600 North Korean soldiers were killed by fighting for Russia against Ukraine out of a total of 15,000 mobilized soldiers, according to the estimation made by South Korean intelligence services, quoted by Seoul MPs, writes Reuters.
