Greenland is not a natural part of Denmark, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday, quoted by Reuters. The diplomat thus referred to the controversial US plans to take control of the island.

During his annual press conference in Moscow, Lavrov also emphasized that Russia is not interested in interfering in the affairs of this autonomous Danish island.
American President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the takeover of Greenland by the United States is important from the point of view of national security. According to the American leader, if Washington does not do this, the island may fall under the influence of Russia or China.
Trump's statements were made despite the long-term presence of American troops in Greenland; Washington may significantly increase their number under existing agreements with Copenhagen.
On Saturday, the American president threatened additional 10 percent tariffs on eight European countries that oppose his plans for the autonomous Danish territory. (PAP)
