In a post published late on Sunday evening, von der Leyen assured that the leaders firmly maintain their commitment to support the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.
“We will always protect our strategic economic and security interests. We will face these challenges for our European solidarity with determination and resolve“- announced the head of the European Commission.
Also on Sunday evening, the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced that due to the situation regarding Greenland, he intended to convene an extraordinary meeting of EU leaders in Brussels next week.

All these actions are a reaction to Saturday's announcement by US President Donald Trump that he will impose a 10% tax. tariffs on eight European countries that have recently sent small groups of soldiers to Greenland to take part in the Danish-led Arctic Endurance exercises. The tariffs would affect Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom.
The announced tariffs would increase to 25% in June. and remain in force – as Trump announced – until the US concludes an agreement on the purchase of the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
