Baptism, Holy Epiphany
Epiphany is one of the main Orthodox holidays. On this day, the church celebrates the entry of Jesus Christ onto the path of serving people. According to legend, the Son of God was baptized in the waters of the Jordan River, and today a hole is made in the ice of the rivers in the form of an Orthodox cross called “Jordan”.
It is believed that on Epiphany night the water acquires miraculous properties and becomes healing, and if you draw water from a river or stock up on water blessed in the church, it will retain its properties all year.
On this day and on subsequent days, holy Epiphany water is used in church ceremonies, given to the sick to drink, and homes and fields are blessed. They also said that anyone who bathes in ice water at Epiphany will be healthy all year.
At Epiphany, the girls tried for the last time to find out their future. They went out of the gate to guess at the first person they met: if you meet an old man, it’s not good, but if you’re a young guy, you’ll get married this year.
It so happened that there are no special songs or dances associated with this holiday. But there are many beliefs and signs. For example, every owner after the service tried to come home very first – then they would not be late with the harvest. The hay on which the Epiphany kutya stood was gradually fed to domestic animals to protect them from disease. On Epiphany night you could pray to heaven for your wish to come true.
The concept of “Epiphany frosts” is associated with the holiday – they have always been particularly strong, but after this day the weather began to change. People said about the frosts: “The cracks are not cracks, but the water cracks have passed.” At the same time, severe frost foreshadowed a good grain harvest. “The frost is severe on Vodokreshcha – don’t complain about bread,” the peasants noted. However, both fog and flakes of snow foreshadowed a good harvest.
