Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on Friday that Russia considers Greenland to be part of Denmark's territory. He described the current situation around this island as extraordinary.

– We assume that Greenland is part of the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark – Peskov told journalists. He noted that the situation was “quite controversial” and “extraordinary from the point of view of international law.” The Kremlin spokesman also noted that “international law is not a priority for US President Donald Trump, as he himself said.”
Trump has recently repeatedly spoken about the need for the United States to take over Greenland, which formally belongs to Denmark. He speculated, among other things, that if the US does not take control of the island, China or Russia will do so. He rejected other solutions, such as increasing the presence of US troops there and the NATO mission proposed by Germany. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he said the US may have to “choose” between Greenland and NATO.
In connection with these announcements, several European countries, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, France and the Netherlands announced on Wednesday and Thursday that they were sending soldiers to the island (in varying numbers, i.e. from one to a dozen or so officers). They will take part in Operation Arctic Endurance exercises, which will last until Saturday. (PAP)
