The Custodian of the Crown, Her Majesty Margareta, sent a letter of condolences on Thursday for the death of Princess Irina of Greece and Denmark, first cousin of King Mihai, informs Agerpres.

“The Royal Family of Romania learned with great sadness the sad news of the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Irina of Greece and Denmark, the youngest child of King Pavlos and Queen Frederica of the Hellenes, born in 1942”, announced the Royal Family of Romania, in a message published on Facebook.

Princess Irina was a first cousin of King Mihai.

“Princess Irina was a man of great soul sensitivity, generous and modest, discreet and profound. Her Majesty and the whole family keep a warm memory of her, a deep affection and great admiration for her chosen moral and intellectual profile. Her Majesty Margareta Custodian of the Crown today sent a letter of condolence to Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain. May God rest her in peace!”, the Royal Family of Romania added.

An erudite intellectual, the princess was interested throughout her life in philosophy, archeology and history, literature and foreign languages. The princess was a talented pianist and a devoted servant of social causes. He lived for several years in India, then in Spain, spending much of his time in Greece.

She was the founder of the organization “Mundo en Armonia”, which she led for several decades.

Queen Mother Elena, like King Mihai, Queen Ana and their daughters, was always very close to the entire Royal Family of Greece, in all generations, the Royal Family of Romania stated.

Princess Irina visited Romania and met with King Mihai and Queen Ana, as well as the Custodian of the Crown Margareta and Prince Radu often, on various family occasions, in Geneva, Madrid, Athens, Belgrade and London.

In 2007, Princess Irina of Greece and Prince Radu took part, at the invitation of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in a scientific visit to the North Pole.
