Former president Traian Băsescu declared, on Digi24, that “Romanians were overwhelmed by the large number of taxes that came upon them at the beginning of the year”.
In the edition that will be broadcast on Sunday of the show “In front of you”, the former head of state revealed that he pays a tax of 2,200 lei for his home, “compared to 800 or so lei” before this year's increases. “And the car, zero, that I don't have,” he added, laughing.
“It's a consistent increase, but I think that a fair tax has now been reached, in relation to a 154 square meter apartment. If we can't pay the 2,200 lei per year, we'll go to a two-room apartment, being pensioners, but for now we can pay,” continued Traian Băsescu.
“The Romanians were overwhelmed”
Asked how he would rate society's reaction to these increases, the former leader from Cotroceni said: “I think that Romanians, especially those with low incomes, whether employees or pensioners, were overwhelmed by the large number of taxes that came upon them at the beginning of the year, taxes, excises and fuel, house tax, car tax, school tax, tax on… All taxes increased and Romanians were overwhelmed”.
“I think it is something that the Government should have notified. There were a total of 17 taxes and excises, and increased taxes, a list of 17. Every Romanian was hit by at least five or six of them. Not to mention that it also overlapped with the reductions in increments in state companies and the state apparatus, so there were many hits at once. Which way the Romanian turned, he woke up with a red face. He hit to the right, he had another shot”, Traian Băsescu also declared.
