Krasnoyarsk Siberian Federal University expert Sergei Verkhovets explained why Epiphany frosts come and whether they should always be expected at the end of January.
According to SibFU Vice-Rector for Advanced Projects and an expert at the first world-class climate research center “Yenisei Siberia”, Epiphany falls at the very peak of winter. Usually, it is by this time that the frosty period begins in Russia, so the frosts began to be called “Epiphany” frosts.

“Around December 22, anticyclones arrive. This is due to the movement of the Earth around the Sun. There is a transfer of arctic masses of cold air, and the temperature drops. Because of this, frosts usually set in in the middle of winter. This is not observed every year, but the frequency of the phenomenon is quite high. Therefore, it turns out that according to signs, Epiphany is the coldest period,” explained Sergei Verkhovets.
The duration of the frosty period is usually no more than a week. But there are also anomalies — Sometimes low temperatures are not recorded at all or the cold lingers for several weeks.
In addition, Sergei Verkhovets recalled climate change: “Climate scientists often use the term “nervous.” This means that we will see temperature swings more and more every year.».
