The proposal for another package of sanctions from Europe may be a serious blow to the Russian economy. “The European Union should ban companies from supporting Moscow's oil and gas transport fleet, introduce sanctions against Russian fertilizers and stop exports of luxury goods to Russia,” said Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, quoted by Reuters. As Reuters points out, the previous restrictions focused mainly on weakening the oil and gas sector, the Kremlin's main source of income.

No more exporting luxury products to Russia
Stenergard said the next EU sanctions package should include a complete ban on European companies providing services to Russian ships carrying oil, gas and coal. “The restrictions should cover everything: no transport, no transhipment of goods between ships, no insurance and no port repairs,” said the Swedish politician.
She said the EU should also impose sanctions on the export of Russian fertilizers — Russia's third-largest export to the EU. But that's not all. “We want to end the export of luxury goods from the EU to Russia,” Stenergard said. “It annoys me that rich Russian consumers can wear expensive Italian clothing brands and drink exquisite French wines.” – she emphasized, quoted by the Reuters Agency.

As “Rzeczpospolita” reminds, from 2022 Russia will be banned from exporting luxury goods worth more than EUR 300. However, the products of many elite Western brands are still imported by third countries such as China, Türkiye and others. The 20th sanctions package should solve this problem.
Brussels adopted the 19th sanctions package in October 2025. It introduced a ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). It also included 45 companies from outside Russia that helped bypass Western restrictions.
