Timothee Chalamet triumphed in one of the most contested categories at the Golden Globes on Sunday, winning the trophy for best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for his role as a professional table tennis player in “Marty Supreme”, reports Reuters. Another major award, that of directing, went to Paul Thomas Anderson, for “One Battle After Another”, the film with the most nominations at the Golden Globes.
Chalamet beat out Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney and other big names at the red carpet ceremony in Beverly Hills, California. “This category is very competitive. I admire all of you,” Chalamet told his fellow nominees in the category.
The actor recalled that in previous years he left the Globes without winning. “I'd be lying if I didn't say those moments made this moment all the sweeter,” he said.
DiCaprio was considered a strong contender after his starring role in the dark comedy One Battle After Another. His co-star Teyana Taylor won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
'K-Pop Demon Hunters' Phenomenon Awards
“Good Hang with Amy Poehler” has won a new Golden Globe award for podcasts.
“It's an attempt to make a very harsh and unfriendly world a little more full of love and laughter, and to laugh with people, not at them. We're having a lot of fun making it,” Poehler said.
“Golden,” the catchy song from the Netflix phenomenon “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” was named Best Original Song.
“It's never too late to shine as you were meant to,” said Korean-American singer Ejae as she accepted the award.
“K-Pop Demon Hunters” also won the important category for best animated film.
A jab at DiCaprio on stage at the Golden Globes
Host Nikki Glaser joked that the Globes were “arguably the biggest thing going on in the world right now.”
She cracked jokes at the stars seated in the Beverly Hills ballroom. Glaser joked about DiCaprio's reputation for dating young women, before apologizing for the “cheap” remark. “We don't know anything else about you, man,” she added.
“One Battle After Another competed in the best musical or comedy category with the table tennis story of 'Marty Supreme,' starring Timothee Chalamet, and the dark comedy 'Bugonia,' among others.
Competing in the best dramatic film category were “Jay Kelly,” starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, Guillermo del Toro's version of “Frankenstein,” the supernatural horror film “Sinners” and “Hamnet,” a story about William Shakespeare's family.
The Golden Globes are among the first Hollywood awards in 2026 to be handed out ahead of the film industry's top honors, the Oscars, in March.
Globes voters don't get to vote at the Oscars, but a Globes win can help draw attention to potential Academy Award contenders.
Globe winners are chosen by more than 300 entertainment journalists, compared to approximately 9,000 voters who select Oscar winners. The Globes' voting body has been expanded in recent years, and organizers have instituted reforms after criticism of ethical misconduct and a lack of diversity.
