Cuba is “a free and independent nation”, President Miguel-Diaz Canel said on Sunday, in a reaction to threats by his US counterpart, Donald Trump, who had warned Havana to make a deal “before it is too late”.
The Cuban president said that “no one dictates what” his country should do, in a post on the X platform, according to News.ro.
“Cuba does not aggress, but has been aggressed by the United States for 66 years, and it does not threaten, but prepares, ready to defend its homeland until the last drop of blood,” Miguel-Diaz Canel also declared.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused the United States of behaving in a “criminal” manner that threatens global peace, according to Reuters.
In his post on X, the head of Cuban diplomacy said that his country has not received compensation for security services provided to other countries. Cuba, he continued, has the right to import fuel from any country that wants to export it.
Cuba has traditionally imported most of its fuel from Venezuela and Mexico.
Trump had threatened Cuba
The US president urged Cuban officials to “make a deal” before it is “too late”.
“Cuba will get no more oil and money – zero! I strongly suggest they make a deal before it's too late,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“Cuba lived, for many years, on large amounts of oil and money from Venezuela. In return, Cuba provided 'security services' to the last two Venezuelan dictators, but that's over! Most of those Cubans are dead as a result of the US attack last week, and Venezuela no longer needs protection from the robbers and blackmailers who held them hostage for so many years,” the US leader added.
