The Romanian mountaineer Adrian Ahrițculesei, aged 42, managed to reach the South Pole on Friday, after three days before he conquered the highest peak in Antarctica and two years ago the highest volcano there, “a Romanian first”, announced the sportsman's manager, Ștefan Adrian Jurca, on Saturday.

The climber, known for having conquered the summit of Everest and the seven highest volcanoes in the world, left for Antarctica at the end of last year.

“Adrian Ahrițculesei caught an opportunity of good weather, which allowed him to approach the South Pole, as part of the expedition he is carrying out in Antarctica. It is a Romanian first that Adrian managed to reach all three important points of the white continent: the South Pole on January 9, Mount Vinson on January 6 – the highest peak on the continent – and Mount Sidley (4,285 meters) on January 17, 2023 – the highest inactive volcano from the continent”, the sportsman's manager declared for Agerpres.

He showed that, in this way, the mountaineer from Petroșani can say that he achieved “a triple” that Adrian Ahrițculesei called the “Arctic Triple”.

Four days ago, the mountaineer Adrian Ahrițculesei conquered, on January 6, Mount Vinson (4,892 meters), the highest in Antarctica, the ascent taking place at temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Currently, the climber from Petroșani has set out to complete the Seven Summits Circuit, which includes the highest peaks on each continent. He has so far conquered six of these peaks, including Everest (8,848 meters), and the success in Antarctica brings him closer to the end point of this difficult circuit.

The athlete still has to climb the highest peak in North America, Mount McKinley (6,194 meters), which is located in Alaska.

Adrian Ahrițculesei also has in his portfolio the completion of the “Circuit of the 7 volcanoes”, in January 2023, thus becoming the first man in Romania to record such a performance.

Aged 42, a graduate of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Timișoara, the climber works as an optometrist at a company in Petroșani.
