An explosion occurred in a residential building in Madrid on Friday, killing an 80-year-old woman and injuring nine others, according to the announcement made by the authorities, AFP and El Pais daily wrote.
The explosion led to the collapse of part of the four-story building in the Carabanchel district, located in the south of the Spanish capital.
Emergency services said they treated eight people with minor injuries.

The woman who died was in an apartment on the 4th floor with her 84-year-old husband when the explosion occurred.
“The man suffered minor injuries,” emergency services said. “He was rescued by the fire department and transported to the October 12 Hospital.”
When they arrived at the scene, “Madrid City Hall firefighters put out the flames affecting the kitchen and the terrace of the apartment,” the emergency services confirmed. “The fire spread to some awnings on the facade, but did not cause additional damage inside other homes.”

Residents of neighboring buildings said they heard “a loud explosion” and then “shouts” urging them to self-evacuate. Police cordoned off the entire area.
The authorities are continuing to analyze the site to assess the condition of the buildings, and will then begin efforts to establish the cause of the explosion.
“It is a little premature to speculate on any cause at this time,” commented a spokesman for the Madrid Fire Department.
