The AUR group from the Senate declared, on Saturday, that it “waits” for the approach regarding the simple motion against the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, “to be initiated by signature by the PSD senators”.

AUR accused PSD of playing a “double game”.

“Otherwise, we consider that the bellicose statements in the public space of the PSD representatives regarding the voting of the MERCOSUR agreement by the representatives of the current government are just smokescreens intended to cover the lack of importance of the PSD and the Minister of Agriculture in the current governing coalition,” reads the statement sent by the AUR on Saturday.

George Simion's party claims that “the political decision of the majority ruling Romania, through Nicușor Dan and the Bolojan government, was to vote without objection the harmful agreement with the Mercosur countries, a serious betrayal of the interests of Romanian farmers”.

“We believe that the PSD can no longer claim to be an opposition party when it is party to all the acts of national treason in the current government and we are waiting to vote on a possible simple motion against the Minister of Foreign Affairs or of censure against the Bolojan government, which will be initiated only under the conditions specified previously”, the AUR statement also reads.

On Saturday, a group of opposition senators, headed by Ninel Peia from the PACE Group – First Romania, announced that they will submit a simple motion against Oana Țoiu, accusing her of the “defective, ideological and uncoordinated” way in which she represented Romania's interests in the “European decision-making process” regarding the EU-Mercosur agreement.

PSD had criticized the ministry led by Oana Țoiu

On Friday, the PSD sent a press release entitled “The decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to vote for the EU-Mercosur Agreement in its current form is an act of betrayal of the interests of Romanian farmers”.

“PSD strongly condemns the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mandate Romania's representative in COREPER to vote in favor of the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement, in the absence of clear clauses guaranteeing that Romanian farmers will be protected from imports from Latin America”, declared the party led by Sorin Grindeanu.

President Nicușor Dan also sent a statement on Friday, who said that Romania voted in favor of this trade agreement “after we negotiated, together with other European states, additional elements to protect Romanian and European producers, especially in the agricultural sector”.

“Through this Agreement, which will lead to the creation of one of the largest free trade zones in the world, European countries are increasing their presence in an important commercial region, and Romania will thus have the opportunity to export products exempt from the high customs duties that were applied until now,” said the head of state.
