“Steven Spielberg's best film of the last 20 years”. The first reactions to “The Day of Truth”, which is to appear in cinemas

Steven Spielberg's new film Disclosure Day has been previewed to members of the trade press ahead of its looming release, with early reactions describing the sci-fi production as “Spielberg's best film in 20 years”.
Special praise was collected by Emily Blunt, the main actress of the feature film, Variety magazine writes. The initial trailer published by the Universal Pictures studio for “The Day of Truth” was almost as mysterious. What does this one look like?
It starts with, “If you knew we weren't alone, if someone showed it to you and proved it to you, would it scare you?”, as the film's IMDb description notes.
The film that Spielberg prepared for this year will premiere in Romanian cinemas on June 12, at the same time as the international premiere, according to Cinemagia.ro.
The marketing campaign for this film has revolved around the fact that more details will be “revealed” on the day it opens in theaters, a reference to the feature film's title.
For Spielberg, now 79, “Day of Truth” marks his first film since “The Fabelmans,” his semi-biographical feature that hits theaters in 2022.
What is known about Steven Spielberg's new film
What hasn't been kept secret is that “Day of Truth” will be a UFO movie based on an original idea by Spielberg, as well as starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson, among others.
Meanwhile, Blunt has been revealed to play a Kansas City weather anchor who is suddenly overwhelmed by a mysterious alien force while presenting the forecast live on TV.
O'Connor, on the other hand, plays an alien life theorist who is determined to reveal to the whole world the truth about the existence of life beyond Earth.
The Universal studio published a new trailer on Wednesday itself, before the embargo for the first reactions from critics and journalists who could see it in the world preview:
The first reactions to Spielberg's new film “The Day of Truth”.
Germain Lussier, veteran entertainment reporter at Gizmodo, posted his reaction on the “X” platform, writing:
“I thoroughly enjoyed The Day of Truth. It's a dense rollercoaster that combines a chase, a romance and a mystery, all wrapped in a sci-fi sense of wonder. It's Spielberg's best film in 20 years, full of all the magic that makes his films so special, plus a memorable character/performance from Emily Blunt.”
Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub agreed with Lussier's assessment and noted:
“To almost no one's surprise, Steven Spielberg delivered yet another monumental success with 'Day of the Truth' (…) The only thing I will say is that Emily Blunt is incredible. I know big summer movies aren't usually the kind of productions whose performances get attention come awards season, but when people see what she does in this film…”.
Emily Blunt, widely praised for her performance in the movie “Day of Truth”
Film reporter Bill Bria highlighted, for his part, “the film's stunning visual compositions, David Koepp's screenplay – a cross between 'The X-Files' and the Bible – constructed as a permanent balancing act, Emily Blunt's most accomplished performance of her career and John Williams' best soundtrack in years”.
Bria described the film as “captivating and moving”.
Spielberg developed the story with screenwriter David Koepp, with whom he has worked on such films as “Jurassic Park”, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”.
Tessa Smith, film and television reporter at Rotten Tomatoes, says, “'Day of Truth' is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Truly something special,” Smith wrote on X.
“I was hanging on every word, completely engrossed in the story as it unfolded. The soundtrack enhances every scene perfectly. Part mystery, part 'Twilight Zone', but something completely new at the same time… WOW,” she added.

One of the most titled directors in history
The Day of Truth marks Spielberg's 37th feature film and is considered one of the most anticipated feature films of the year.
The filmography of the famous three-time Academy Award-winning director includes numerous sci-fi blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, as well as Third Degree Encounter, ET The Extraterrestrial, Special Report, Artificial Intelligence and Ready Player One: Let the Game Begin.
Spielberg's 1977 Third Degree Encounter earned him his very first Academy Award nomination, and ET the Extraterrestrial another five years later.
Steven Spielberg finally won two Oscars in 1994, one as a director and one as a producer, thanks to his historical drama Schindler's List. “Saving Private Ryan,” his 1998 war film, earned him another Oscar for director.
Spielberg has also won four BAFTA Awards from the UK film industry, five Golden Globe Awards, 13 Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for Broadway productions and a Grammy Award from the music industry.
Spielberg won the Grammy Award just this year for best film about music for his documentary “Music by John Williams.”
The new award earned him so-called “EGOT” status, making him only the 22nd person in history to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The respective awards are presented by the television industry, the music industry, the film industry and the theater industry.
