Faux fur has long ceased to be a simple replacement for natural fur. Modern models look luxurious and require careful care to maintain their appearance.
Regular or improper washing can permanently damage the pile: matting it, making it stiff or stripping it of color.
Fashionistas shared proven dry and wet cleaning methods approved by laundry experts.
1. Dry cleaning
- Brush your fur coat regularly with a soft brush in the direction of the pile to prevent matting and maintain volume.
- Homemade “powder” for cleaning: Apply cornstarch, baby powder or baking soda evenly to the pile, rub gently with a soft brush and leave for 30-60 minutes.
- Shake the product thoroughly and remove any remaining powder using a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool.
2. Hand wash
- Dissolve liquid detergent for delicate fabrics or sulfate-free shampoo in a bowl of cold water (no higher than 30°C). The foam should be plentiful.
- Immerse the fur coat in water and gently squeeze the fabric, passing soap suds through the pile. Do not rub, twist or soak for a long time.
- Rinse. Change the water 2-3 times until it becomes completely clear.
- Remove the water. Do not twist it, it is better to wrap the fur coat in a terry towel so that it absorbs excess moisture. You can gently blot it.
How to remove individual stains (grease, wine, cosmetics)
- Apply foam from a mild shampoo to the stain.
- Blot gently with a damp sponge.
- Pat dry with a clean cloth.
Proper drying is the key to success
- Lay the fur coat horizontally on a dry towel or mesh drying rack in a well-ventilated area.
- Never hang it on a hanger – wet fabric will deform under its own weight.
- Avoid direct sun, radiators and heaters.
- Shake occasionally and gently comb the pile as it dries.
- The product can dry completely in 1-3 days.
What is absolutely forbidden to do?
- Wash in the washing machine and dry in the dryer.
- Use bleaches, fabric softeners, and aggressive stain removers.
- Iron or steam.
- Clean with acetone, alcohol or solvents.
Caring for faux fur requires delicacy, but is simple. Alternate between regular dry cleaning and occasional hand washing as they get dirty, and your on-trend fur coat will look new season after season.
