According to the MAE, in the coming period there may be temporary blockages or traffic restrictions on national roads, highways, tunnels and secondary roads, including the routes leading to the border crossing points. One of the affected areas is the Athens-Thessaloniki highway, where traffic could be affected in both directions, for variable intervals, starting on January 8, 2026.

Also, the Romanian authorities anticipate malfunctions at the border points, especially at Promachonas, Exochi, Niki and Evzoni, where waiting times could increase significantly.

The MAE recommends Romanians to follow the instructions of the local authorities, to use the detour routes provided and to avoid the areas where demonstrations or farmers' mobilizations are announced.

For consular assistance, Romanian citizens can call the numbers of the Embassy of Romania in Athens (+30 210 672 8875, +30 210 672 8879) or the Consulate General in Thessaloniki (+30 2310 340 088), the calls being permanently answered by the Contact and Support Center for Romanian Citizens Abroad.

In emergency situations, the special telephone numbers of the Romanian Embassy in Athens (+30 697 899 6222) and the Consulate General in Thessaloniki (+30 694 604 9076) are also available.

The MAE also recommends consulting the official websites of the institution and the Greek authorities, as well as using the “Călătoriște informat” application, intended for Romanians traveling outside the country.
