“Heart attack” taxes in the Capital: 800,000 lei for a 70 sqm apartment, due to an error

Many Bucharest residents were shocked after receiving payment notices for local taxes that exceeded all expectations. The amounts, sometimes wrong, have caused confusion and discontent, especially among those whose companies are based in apartments.

Several citizens from Bucharest were surprised by the bills they received. In one case, for an apartment with the headquarters of a company, the tax paid last year was 200 lei, and in 2026 the amount jumped to 68,000 lei. In another case, a Bucharest resident who recently bought an apartment found out that he had to pay 800,000 lei. Obviously, it was an error, but the shock was huge.
Other taxpayers had similarly large increases: from 1,000 lei last year, the tax reached 20,000 lei this year.
Hallucinatory cases and statements of Bucharest residents
Another shocking example is that of a man who received an invoice of 800,000 lei for his home. Of course, it was an error, but the reaction was immediate.
Alexandru, the one who had received the invoice, explained: “A fantastic error, but Romania is the land of all possibilities“. He stated that, in the meantime, the situation had been remedied: “A lady from Taxes and Taxes called me to apologize and tell me that the error has been corrected. I have to pay, in fact, about 500 lei. I've owned the property for about a month and I barely went to declare it. I imagine that 70 square kilometers have passed on the surface instead of dit is 70 mp. That's my speculation.”
“I had a rather unpleasant surprise… From an amount of up to 2,000 lei last year, approximately 1,700 lei, this year it reached 46,000 lei, i.e. 9,000 euros. It is true that I own a non-residential property and assessments are made every 5 years… The assessment expired last year and must be done this year… But even so, the amount is quite large. I don't think we are at New York to pay thousands of euros in taxes”a Bucharest resident told, according to Antena 3 CNN.
Another resident of the Capital, who has the registered office of the company in his parents' apartment, said with a laugh: “I received 68,000 lei in payment, instead of 770 lei as would have been normal after the increases”. He states that last year he paid only 200 lei. “I looked at the comma. The first time I said it must be a mistake… If the old people came alone, wouldn't they have a heart attack here?”
Another taxpayer with a hybrid car complained about the explosive increase in tax: “It's sad… From 390 lei last year, to 5,300 lei – 11 times more”.
Another man found out that he had to pay more than 20,000 lei, after last year he had paid only 1,000 lei for the same space. “Good thing I have a heart problem and take medicine“, he joked.
Citizen reaction and problems with counters
Many have come to the counters for clarification, but so far it is not clear whether all these cases are errors or the actual payment amounts. It is certain that people who own companies in apartments will pay much higher taxes than before.
The tension grew considerably, and there was even an incident at the Taxes and Local Taxes Department in Sector 2. A citizen, dissatisfied with the wrong calculation of the tax, asked for an explanation.
