Almost half of Romanians want closer economic relations with Russia, according to an Avangarde survey. Big difference between urban and rural

Almost half of the Romanians surveyed in a new Avangarde survey answered that they think Romania should have closer economic relations with Russia, the percentage being only 1% lower than those who spoke against it.
“Taking into account the way the Russian Federation looks today, economically speaking, do you think that Romania should have closer, economic relations with it?”, was one of the questions asked by Avangarde in a sociological research that it called “Regional security – requirements and expectations”.
To this question 48% of respondents answered “yes”, while 49% said “no”. 3% of those who participated in the survey answered “don't know/don't answer”.
Broken down by urban/rural, 55% of urban respondents answered “yes”, the percentage being only 36% in rural areas. 37% of urban respondents answered “no”, while in rural areas the percentage of negative answers was 55%.
Romanians are confident that NATO will intervene in case of Russian aggression
Another question was “Do you personally consider that if Romania were attacked by the Russian Federation, our country would be defended by NATO?”. 74% of respondents answered “yes”, 17% “no”, and the rest “don't know/don't answer”. Here, trust is higher in urban areas (78% “yes” answers) than in rural areas (62%).
The percentage of negative answers was 12% in urban areas, respectively 27% in rural areas.
To a question about Romania's need to quickly arm itself to strengthen its defense capacity, 71% of respondents answered that it is necessary, 22% said against it and 7% said they did not know or were undecided.
Avangarde conducted the survey between December 27-30, 2025, on a representative sample of 1,000 people. Its margin of error is +/- 3.4%.
