The dollar rises in price after Maduro's arrest. Bloomberg explains the reason

According to media reports, the dollar is strengthening, while the euro fell by 0.3% and the Mexican peso by 0.7%. At the same time, US Treasury yields fell slightly.

This week, the dollar exchange rate may be affected by important US economic data, in particular inflation and non-agricultural employment indicators, the agency reports.

Bloomberg quotes Oversea-Chinese Banking analyst in Singapore Christopher Wong as saying that events in Venezuela are likely to lead to a quick end to the conflict rather than prolonged fighting. He adds that while the situation supports demand for precious metals, economic data remains key for the dollar this week, particularly employment figures and survey results.

Context

On the night of January 3, 2026, the United States launched strikes on the capital of Venezuela, Caracas. The media wrote that at least 40 people, both military and civilian, were killed as a result of the US attack in Venezuela.

Maduro declared a state of emergency and mobilization in the country. He said the US goal is to “seize Venezuela's strategic resources, including its oil and minerals.”

The United States detained and removed Maduro and his wife Celia Flores from Venezuela, Trump reported. According to CBS, they were captured by the elite special forces unit of the US Army, Delta.

Maduro and Flores were charged with conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, illegal possession of machine guns and explosive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and explosive devices against the United States, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Maduro was taken to a pre-trial detention center in New York. Maduro is expected to appear in Manhattan Federal Court next week.
