

The media writes that this center is known for difficult and inhumane conditions of detention. Axios notes that high-profile prisoners such as Ghislaine Maxwell, an accomplice of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and rapper P. Diddy, have been held here.
MDC Brooklyn is the only federal detention facility in New York City, where about 1,300 people are currently being held. Most of them are awaiting trials. The center has been criticized for unsanitary conditions, constant lockdowns, inadequate medical care and understaffing.
Federal judges have previously called the detention center “inhumane” and “barbaric,” and journalists and human rights activists have reported cases of violence by guards and deaths of prisoners.
According to US President Donald Trump, Maduro and his wife will appear in an American court and will be held accountable for their crimes. The operation during which they were detained was called Operation Absolute Resolve and was aimed at regime change and control over the state oil resources of Venezuela.
Context
On the night of January 3, the United States launched strikes on the capital of Venezuela, Caracas. Part of the city was left without electricity. Maduro declared a state of emergency and mobilization in the country. He said the US goal is to “seize Venezuela's strategic resources, including its oil and minerals.”
The United States detained Maduro and Flores and took them away from Venezuela, US President Donald Trump said. According to CBS, they were captured by the US Army's elite special forces unit, Delta. They were charged with conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, illegal possession of machine guns and explosive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and explosive devices against the United States, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
