In 2022, Russian troops occupied almost 64,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, in 2023 – 580 square kilometers, and in 2024 – 4,000 square kilometers – according to an analysis prepared on the basis of data from two American think tanks: the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP).

In December 2025, Russia captured 244 square kilometers of Ukraine, the least since March, but since spring it has made significant progress in conquering Ukrainian territories, and has recently been accelerating its offensive in Donbas, AFP noted.

Even before the start of a full-scale war on February 24, 2022, Russia occupied Crimea and part of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine. Currently, it also controls most of the Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts, as well as small parts of the Kharkov, Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy oblasts.

According to the Ukrainian analytical project DeepState, Russia will have acquired approximately 4,300 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025. (PAP)
