A new tax on monkeys? A new petition has appeared in the Senate

It is difficult not to notice the problem of empty bottles after the so-called monkeys. Throughout Poland, glass bottles line lawns, roadsides, sidewalks, and even around schools and churches. The originators of the petition that was sent to the Senate see a way to solve the problem by introducing a new tax for producers of alcohol in small packages.

“The authors of the petition propose the introduction of an additional environmental fee of at least PLN 1 for each monkey sold,” we read on the Senate website.

Empty bottles of alcoholic beverages (up to 0.2 l) are one of the most frequently found waste in public spaces.
Lots of empty “monkeys” on the streets. Will an additional fee solve the problem?
“Currently, the entire responsibility for cleaning the so-called the monkeys fall on municipalities and municipal services, which are often underinvested and have problems with carrying out their basic tasks” – state the authors of the petition.
Of course, the originators of the new fee do not forget that low price and easy availability encourage impulsive alcohol consumption. Which contributes to social and health problems.

However, the petition, which was submitted to the Senate at the end of 2025, focused on the fight against monkey bottles littering public space.
Proponents of the changes indicate that the proposed fee “would be transferred to municipal budgets for: cleaning of public spaces, ecological education and the development of local waste collection systems.”
For now, it is not known whether and when the Senate would consider the petition. All we know is that the application was submitted to the Petitions Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Poland for consideration.
