Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States, Israel and Europe of waging a “total war” against his country in an interview published on Saturday, according to AFP.
“In my opinion, we are at total war with the United States, Israel and Europe. They want to bring our country to its knees,” Pezeshkian told the official website of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, six months after the Israeli and American attacks on Iran.
France, Britain and Germany were behind moves to reimpose UN sanctions against Iran in September over Iran's nuclear proliferation activities.
“This war is worse than the one launched against us by Iraq. On closer inspection, it is much more complex and difficult,” he added, referring to the 1980-1988 conflict between the two neighboring countries that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
The US and its allies accuse Iran of trying to obtain nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.
12 day war between Israel and Iran
In June there was a 12-day war between Israel and Iran, a conflict triggered by unprecedented Israeli attacks on military and nuclear sites in Iran, as well as on civilian areas.
The attacks resulted in more than 1,000 casualties, according to Iranian authorities. The Israeli operation was later joined by the United States, which bombed three nuclear sites in Iran.
Washington's involvement in the conflict led to the suspension of negotiations that had begun in April on Tehran's nuclear program.
After returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump resumed his policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, which he had initiated in his first term. The steps included additional sanctions aimed at crippling Iran's economy and reducing its revenue from oil sales on the global market.
