The consul from the Romanian Embassy in Lisbon was moved to the place where the famous funicular “Gloria” derailed, to keep in touch directly with the emergency device organized by the Portuguese authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces, which states that there is so far information about the involvement of some Romanian citizens.
“Against the background of information on a tragic accident with multiple victims, the Romanian Embassy in Lisbon is in contact with the local authorities. The consul within the mission moved to the scene to keep in touch directly with the emergency device organized by the Portuguese authorities,” announces the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also states that, until now, there is no information on the existence of victims of Romanian citizens and no consular assistance requests have been received.
“We will inform as relevant information from the local authorities is obtained,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

At least 15 people died on Wednesday in Lisbon, after the Portuguese funicular “Gloria” derailed.
A total of 18 people were injured, five of them serious and 13, including a child.
So far the nationality of the victims is not known.
The parquet has opened an investigation into the fatal accident, and the causes of the derail are investigated.
The funicular was in maintenance between August 26 and September 30, 2024, observatador says. According to the publication, the employees of the company Carris, who operate the funicular, have previously reported problems with the voltage cable, which caused braking difficulties.
