Ukraine demands extradition of Russian archaeologist detained in Warsaw

Head of the Northern Black Sea Region Archeology Sector of the Museum's Department of the Ancient World was detained in Warsaw on December 11 on the way from Amsterdam to Belgrade. Ukraine suspects him of illegal excavations in occupied Crimea. After his arrest, he refused to testify.

The extradition request, which has already been received by the Polish prosecutor's office, needs to be assessed from a formal point of view, the radio station notes. Investigators will check for compliance with the European Convention on Extradition, and will also consider the possibility of grounds for inadmissibility of extradition of the detainee. These include, in particular, double jeopardy or asylum.

The response from the prosecutor's office will be submitted to the court, which will decide on extradition. Butyagin's pre-trial detention expires on January 13.
