Pniówek Mine – important deposits of JSW
According to the company's information, the Pniówek mine was built in 1963-1974. It joined JSW in 1993.
The mining area of the Pniówek deposit is 28.6 square kilometers and the operational resources are 101.9 million tons. The mining area of the Pawłowice 1 deposit is 15.8 square kilometers, and the operational resources are 54.0 million tons. The mine produces type 35.1 coking coal.
In recent days, JSW completed the deepening of shaft III in Pniówek to a depth of 1,053 m and opened a new level of 1,000 m. Work on these investments has been carried out since 2020.
The plant plays a strategic role in providing the raw material necessary for steel production. It can plan mining for many decades to come. Despite its modern infrastructure, the Pniówek Coal Mine is a plant with a high methane hazard, which has led to tragic events in the past, including the disaster of April 2022, which claimed the lives of 16 miners.

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) is the largest producer of coking coal in the European Union, which is a key raw material used in the steel production process. The company conducts mining operations in four mines in Upper Silesia, including the Pniówek and Borynia-Zofiówka-Jastrzębie mines, and its structure also includes processing plants and coking plants.
As a company of strategic importance for the national economy, it is controlled by the State Treasury, which holds over half of the shares, and is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In 2025, JSW is struggling with a difficult financial situation resulting from low global raw material prices.
