The United States has intercepted a new ship off the coast of Venezuela in international waters, two American officials told Reuters on Sunday, marking the second such operation this weekend.

The intervention took place just a few days after US President Donald Trump announced a “blockade” of all sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, in a new escalation of pressure exerted by Washington on the government in Caracas, writes News.ro quoting Reuters.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not specify which ship was intercepted or the exact location of the operation. Also, they did not provide details regarding the vessel's cargo or any subsequent measures taken by the American authorities.

The blockade announced by the Trump administration mainly targets Venezuela's oil sector, the South American state's main source of income, and is part of a broader strategy to isolate the regime led by Nicolas Maduro.
