The Russian army modified its tactics to launch the attack drones against Ukraine, to bypass its anti-aircraft defense, said the spokesman of the Ukrainian Air Force, Yurii Ihnat, in an interview with RBC Ukraine, published on Tuesday.
Russia has intensified its production of Drone to launch more and more powerful attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure lately. The night of May 26 marked the largest drone attack so far during the war, involving 355 Shahed (Kamikaze drones) and “bait” UAVs, The Kyiv Independent notes.
Russia's new tactic is to launch the drones at high altitudes, over 2 kilometers (1.4 miles) above the ground, and to constantly change their routes. Then, the drones are directly on the target, Ihnat said.
“At this altitude, they become more visible to our radars, but they remain outside the range of small caliber weapons, heavy machine guns and mobile fire teams,” explained the spokesman.
The Russian forces also performed simultaneous raids on the same residential or facility area, also resorting to the use of simulation drones called Parodiya (“a parody”, in Romanian), which increased the pressure on Ukraine's anti -aircraft defense systems, according to the spokesman.
Ihnat said that the recent Russian drone attacks included about 60% attack drones and 40% “Momeli” parodiya drones.
Russia has constantly conducted Drone Shahed made in Iran and their children internal products, Geran, to overwhelm the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense in massive attacks, with UAV “swarms”, which allowed the ballistic and cruise missiles to pass the defensive systems of Kiev forces.
The British financial publication The Economist has previously reported that Russia uses the “Boets” of the Telegram Messenger application to control the attack drones, thus ensuring real-time flight data for human operators. The new Control Algorithm was revealed in a note hidden inside one of the Russian drones, possibly left behind by a “joint-related Russian engineer” with Ukrainian defense efforts, according to the British publication.
Ukraine's aerial shield is increasingly thin, as the western anti -aircraft defense supplies are exhausted. An undesirable source told the French publication Le Monde that Ukraine remained without ammunition for the two Samp/T air defense batteries, while short -range anti -aircraft systems have not received new missiles for a year and a half.
It is not clear how many patriotic rockets of American production, essential for the interception of Russian ballistic missiles, are still in the stocks of the Ukrainian army, as the Trump administration has not yet approved any new military aid package.
