Ivan Molchalnik
On this day, Orthodox people celebrate the memory of St. John the Silent.
In Rus', Ivan (John) the Silent was supposed to speak and even write as little as possible. In general, we tried not to use words unnecessarily on this day. It was believed that the one who remains silent on Ivan all day will be eloquent all year.
In the morning, it was advisable to stand quietly in front of the icon of John the Silent, pray “to yourself,” and reflect on your actions and thoughts.
People believed that silence on this day would not only get rid of adversity, but also bring good luck to a person. “Ivan is silent, good rumors are growing the business,” people said. Some added that evil spirits could steal your voice on this day.
It was quiet at that time in the winter forest – only the trees were crackling from the frost. Hunters went out into the forest to determine how long the quiet time would last – by how high on the branches the squirrel hid its mushroom reserves.
