Rob Reiner, 79, the director of such famous films as “When Harry Met Sally” and “This is Spinal Tap”, was found dead on Sunday, along with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68. Both were stabbed, according to The Guardian and US media.

Los Angeles police said Sunday they found the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman in a West Los Angeles home at an address that public records associate with Reiner.

Officially, the police did not provide details about the identity of the two deceased people, but a law enforcement source told CNN and the website specialized in celebrity news TMZ that Rob and Michele Reiner are the two people found dead.

Later, a spokesman for the Reiner family confirmed the death of the two on Sunday evening.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesperson said in a statement to the media.

“We are saddened by this sudden loss and ask that our privacy be respected at this incredibly difficult time,” he added.

Both TMZ and People magazine reported that the two suffered injuries from a knife attack. Details regarding the cause of death have not yet been officially released, but detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide and robbery division are investigating the case as “what appears to be a homicide,” said Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Mike Bland.

Who was the director Rob Reiner

Reiner starred in the hit 1970s CBS comedy series “All in the Family” and directed several well-known films, including “The Princess Bride,” “This is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Stand by Me” and “The American President.”

His wife, Michele, 68, was at one point the photographer who took the photo of Donald Trump that appears on the cover of his book, Trump: The Art of the Deal.

In addition to his Hollywood career, Rob Reiner, a New York native and son of the late screenwriter and comedian Carl Reiner, was well known for his political activism.

He appeared in ads targeting George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election and endorsed then-Democratic candidate John Kerry. He also showed his support for Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Hillary Clinton.

Reiner was first married to Penny Marshall, who played Laverne on “Laverne & Shirley” and was also a producer and director. He later married actress Michele Singer, with whom he has three children.
